Overview – Direct Registrants
Most .ie domain holders are customers of our Registrars, companies that manage .ie domains. You will find these listed on our accredited .ie Registrar page. However, some people chose to come to us directly to get their domain(s). This is now going to change.
Demand for the ‘direct’ services has reduced considerably. For this reason, from 31 March 2020, the direct registration service will no longer be available. By this date, we will transfer all direct registrations to an accredited .ie Registrar, 101 Domain.
To explain what this means, we have created a list of frequently asked questions. If you still need more information, please email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will answer your question as quickly as possible.

You will be able to renew your .ie domain with the appointed accredited .ie Registrar, 101 Domain.
There will be no service impact to your .ie domains during this process.
Any websites or email services associated with direct registrations will operate as normal.
There is no charge for this change.
In future, you can pay your .ie domain registration renewal fees due when they fall to the Registrar managing your .ie domain registration, 101 Domain.
Your Registrar will confirm this for you (usually by email).
You can also verify this in the “Account Name” field on our WHOIS lookup service. Type in your domain name, click search and you can view the full Whois information for your domain name.
You can transfer to an accredited .ie Registrar at any time. We explain how to do this on our Find or change your Registrar page.
In summary, you just need to request an Authorisation Code, give this to your new Registrar, and pay them for the transfer. They will take it from there.
The Authorisation Code can be found in the Edit Domain page for the sponsoring Registrar only. To obtain this code, the Registrant must request it from the original sponsoring Registrar.
The original sponsoring Registrar will then send the code by email to the non-sponsoring Registrar which will, in turn, use the code to request the transfer. This code is not required for system level users.
You can also direct your request to our Registration Services team by email to email@example.com – the team will generate the code on your behalf. The Authcode will be sent only to the email address assigned to the Registrant and Administrative Contact on the domain name. Please note we will not give out Authcodes by phone.
Note that the transfer will also roll-forward your renewal date by 1 year.
(For example, if your renewal date is 01-01-2021, it will change to 01-01-2022 after you transfer to your preferred accredited .ie Registrar).
We have done extensive analysis of the service and decided to end direct registration services for a number of reasons. Most country registries have already stopped and others are about to do so. We’ve outlined some of our reasons below:
- Demand for the service has been declining for some time
→ Less than 2,000 domains are registered through the direct registration channel (less than 1% of over 280,000 registrations in the .ie database).
- The .ie internet ecosystem has changed a lot since the introduction of the service
→ There are now more experienced, professional accredited .ie Registrars (over 130 companies).
→ These companies offer a range of services, product bundles, user-friendly platforms, and competitive pricing options.
101 Domain will discuss this with you. Registrars typically offer different pricing plans and service bundles. It is a very competitive market and you can shop around if you would like to discuss your requirements with other Registrars.
It is important to note that Personal Data associated with your .ie domain registrations will also be transferred to the accredited .ie Registrar, 101 Domain, by 31 March 2020.
‘Personal data’ includes the names, address, email address which you provided during the initial registration process and subsequently. No passwords will be transferred. Please note that we do not retain credit card details for any customers.
You can transfer your .ie domain registrations to your preferred accredited .ie Registrar at any time.
